Homes For Sale In Hillsdale NY

The historic town of Hillsdale is almost a metropolis mid-way between Hudson, New York, and Great Barrington, Massachusetts, between the Catskills and the Berkshires… well, it isn’t a metropolis, of course, just the “downtown,” but it seems like one compared to the bucolic surroundings for miles around… part of which is also Hillsdale. There’s a supermarket, two gas stations, fine shops, a good gallery and several restaurants.

But don’t picture anything suburban: What we know of as the center of town—the business district—is the Hillsdale Historic Hamlet District, on the National Register of Historic Places. Not only does this designation give some property-owners tax incentives; it’s also an honor to have Hillsdale’s architectural diversity recognized. The beautiful brick building at the northwest corner of routes 22 and 23 was built in 1790! The Hillsdale House, built in 1810, has been used continuously as an inn since then.

Hillsdale Homes For Sale

Hillsdale Homes For Sale

Homes in Hillsdale range from wonderful old farms with barns, silos and fields to sleek, new architecture-designed habitations. The people living in Hillsdale span the same range, that is to say people who’ve lived there all their lives like their parents and grandparents before them to city folks reveling in the Hudson Valley lifestyle. Apparently one of the reasons people continue to flock to Hillsdale NY is the Hamlet Sewer District; years in the making, the result is a much-admired infrastructure, which continues to attract new residents and businesses to the hamlet. Another is the Ridgeline Overlay District, created to protect scenic view-sheds.

Which leads us to the obvious: A major factor in Hillsdale’s appeal to newcomers is the magnificent landscape—rolling farmland and foothills—and the Roeliff Jansen Kill, which you can access at one of Hillsdale’s town parks, the Roeliff Jansen Park. Just south of town on Route 22, it’s the site of the dog park, rail trail, summer youth programs and the Harvest Barn, in and around which is held the grand Copake-Hillsdale Farmers Market. Here you’ll find not only farm-fresh produce from Common Hands and Hawk Dance farms, but also the goat cheese and prepared meals of Cheval Farmstead Dairy and the work of local artisans such as Bob Bachler Ceramics and Concord Hill Farm body products.

Living in Hillsdale means shopping not only at the farmers market, which runs from the end of May through just before Thanksgiving, but also at all the old and new businesses that give the town its character: One such is Rodgers Book Barn. You have to go looking for it, but it’s worth the trip north of town through the beautiful landscape to get there. In business for nearly 40 years, Maureen Rodgers has a lovely and rustic shop full of carefully categorized used books and CDs. It’s one of those book shops that you go in for books but stay because of the atmosphere and the charismatic owner.

Another special place in Hillsdale NY is LABSpace, “more than an art gallery.” Aside from the art, which is always surprising and appealing, LABSpace is a great community hangout for music, conversation and artist talks, indoors and out. They’re right below CrossRoads Food Shop, so grab something delicious and a drink to go with it and sit downstairs in the LABSpace courtyard for a chat with Julie and Ellen. Other restaurants bringing people to town are the classic 1797 Hillsdale House and Roe Jan Brewing Co.

Besides the weekly visit to their favorite restaurant, old and new residents love the Hillsdale NY region for the outdoors! From Hamlet Park and Roeliff Jansen Park in town to Taconic State Park, Catamount Ski Resort, Harlem Valley Rail Trail, Rheinstrom Hill Audubon Center and Sanctuary,  Copake Lake, Blue Rider Stables, Mt. Washington State Forest and Bash Bill Falls State Park, Hillsdale folks have their choice of every kind of recreational activity on the  map. Add it all up and you’ll find Hillsdale NY a beautiful place to live!
