Glen Spey real estate for sale is a rarity. At the publishing of this page, there was just one listing available in the hamlet. Why? First, the community; while at first glance Glen Spey seems a quiet hamlet in the wilderness where not much happens, don’t be fooled: It’s the home of Fourth of July parades, town-wide yard sales, beauty, holiday community gatherings and beloved small town traditions and occupations that make one feel that some things in life never change, and people are beautiful people wherever they gather.
Second, the natural beauty; in the 1880s, Singer Sewing Machine President George Ross Mackenzie arrived in South Lebanon in Sullivan County, and was struck by how much the area reminded him of the River Spey region in Scotland. He had the the place renamed Glen Spey, and so it has remained to this day, a hamlet in the Town of Lumberland. Rivers, waterfalls and natural springs are typical of Sullivan County, and another Lumberland hamlet, Pond Eddy, is right on the Delaware River, a center of boating and fishing. This is a pretty area.
Well-heeled friends of the sewing machine magnate built the mansions that brought fame to Glen Spey in the late 19th century. Three of those houses remain, including the beautiful Burn Brae which is now a draw for ghost hunters!
In the spectacularly crafted Lumberland Town Hall lives the town museum (an official Path Through History Site) featuring memorabilia and artifacts representing every hamlet in the town and the history of the D&H Canal in Pond Eddy. Locals enjoy community Thanksgiving there and catch concerts on the restored 1894 Steinway Grand, like “Legendary Songwriters of the 20th Century,” given by pianist/vocalist Andy Moss, part of the Town of Lumberland Cultural Series.
