Homes For Sale In Copake NY

By virtue of being off the beaten path a bit, the Town of Copake NY has a nice, old-fashioned vibe about it. Maybe it’s something to do with the 1944 memorial clock tower on the plot of green in the middle of town. Or perhaps it’s because of all the charming old buildings. Whatever the reason, Copake NY has a lot going for it. The pristine landscape and wilderness nearby are a powerful lure, as well.

Somewhat dominating life in the town is the Taconic State Park; the park is located within one of the largest unfragmented forests between Virginia and Maine, 14,400 acres of protected open space spanning three states and designated as one of America's "Last Great Places" by the Nature Conservancy. The other significant factor about Copake NY is that most of the town is in the watershed of the Roeliff Jansen Kill, which flows south from its source in Austerlitz through Copake to the Hudson River. Locals call this the Roe Jan area.

A cluster of rural hamlets makes up the Town of Copake: Copake, West Copake, Copake Falls, Craryville, Copake Lake (encircling Copake Lake) and Taconic Shores (encircling Robinson Pond). The 1845 industrial complex at Copake Iron Works is a former part of the town now in Taconic State Park.

Ongoing initiatives in the Town of Copake NY seek to create a better quality of life for residents. The Copake Waterfront and Community Revitalization Plan for the Bash Bish Brook, Roe Jan Kill & Taghkanic Creek aims to “build a healthy town with access for all to our waterways; sustain essential bonds with nature and our heritage; link our vibrant hamlets; adapt with resilience to change and challenges.” FarmOn! Foundation, based at Empire Farm in Copake, inspires and educates youth for careers in sustainable farming; some of their practical applications are providing locally sourced and ethically produced milk to school lunchrooms in a partnership with Hudson Valley Fresh, hands-on cooking classes and a free summer day camp.

A longstanding town civic center is the 1903 Copake Grange 935, assisting the community through grassroots service, education, advocacy and agriculture awareness. Theater presentations, community dinners, readings, lectures and dance parties are some of the happenings hosted at the Grange.

Several organic farms make their homes in the Roe Jan area: There’s Tiny Hearts Farm, specializing in wholesale flowers and event flowers, and Deep Roots Farm, for fruits, veggies, herbs and flowers. Markristo Farm sells vegetables and flowers and also owns Bridlewood Dressage, a training and boarding equestrian facility. (Aubrey House Farm is another boarding stable nearby.) Hawk Dance Farm speaks for itself: “On our land we utilize no chemicals, pesticides or herbicides in our farming practices. Our farm is not mechanized, and we do everything sustainably by hand. Our soil is nourished with rich compost and green manure cover crops, and we use low-till methods to preserve the health of the soil.”

Local markets abound, including the Copake-Hillsdale Farmers Market, Saturdays May through November; Random Harvest, a worker-owned market, café and community space in Craryville; and, since the late 1800s, the Copake General Store, a full-service grocery and café, “a modern market with an old-fashioned feel.” The Purple Barn in Craryville is a vintage clothing store and more.

Enjoying the outdoors is a foregone conclusion here. First and foremost is the Copake Falls area of the Taconic State Park. A portion of the former New York Central Railroad right-of-way that runs through Copake Falls has been converted into the Harlem Valley Rail Trail, a paved bike path that winds through forest and farmland. For camping there’s a choice of tent, cabin or trailer areas. There’s fishing in Bash Bish Brook, swimming in the 40-foot-deep Ore Pit in summer. In winter it’s ok to cross-country ski or snowshoe on the hiking trails.

At Copake Lake, aside from swimming, hiking and zooming around on personal watercraft, there’s all the fun summer stuff at Dancer's Marine or Copake Lake Boat and Ski. In winter people get out ice fishing and skating or snowmobile around the trails. Weed Mines Pond, stocked annually with rainbow trout, wasn’t named for weeds; the mine was owned at one time by Mr. Weed. Right in town, Copake Memorial Park features three baseball diamonds, an outdoor hockey rink, a pavilion and playground. Rheinstrom Hill is an Audubon sanctuary of over 1,000 acres of primarily forest land. For skiing Catamount is eight miles east.
