Beacon NY History and Lifestyle

Beacon Homes For Sale

Beacon was a famous destination a century ago because of the Mount Beacon Incline Railway, which took people to the top of  Mt. Beacon from 1902 through the ‘70s; D.W. Griffith shot movies there with Mary Pickford, and visitors came from miles around to dine and dance at the mountaintop casino and relax in the hotel and cottages. In 1982 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places, and a group has been working on restoring it for over 20 years.

At the beginning of the 20th century Beacon existed in two halves, one called Matteawan, a thriving industrial center, and the other Fishkill Landing, a busy river port. It wasn’t until 1913 that the two were combined and the City of Beacon was born, named after the mountaintop beacon that was installed to warn General Washington’s troops of a British advance. Always an industry-oriented town — at one time the second-largest producer of hats in the U.S. - Beacon has charming remnants of its past incorporated into the cool façade it now presents.

One of the most beautiful and enduring of the old buildings in Beacon is the Howland Cultural Center. Joseph Howland, a Civil War general and NY State treasurer, commissioned his brother-in-law, Richard Morris Hunt—who designed the Metropolitan Museum of Art—to design Beacon’s Howland Circulating Library, which opened in 1872 and remained a library through 1976, when it moved to larger quarters but kept the name Howland. At that point the not-for-profit Howland Cultural Center came into being. These days it’s not only architectural eye-candy but also the cultural center of Beacon; concerts have been offered there since the library’s earliest days and the arts continue with music, theater and art presentations of all kinds. The HCC is home to the Howland Chamber Music Circle and Beacon Art Adventures.

Your first time in Beacon, you might come in off Route 9D and turn onto Main Street or you might come up from the train station and you might be in search of a good coffee. Banks Square Coffeehouse is  right on the corner. If you don’t care about coffee or tea but do like beer, they were early on the scene with the craft beer revolution and average about nine varieties on tap at all times. Banks Square has one of the best outdoor seating areas in town, covered with trees and, depending on how relaxed you are, you might really hang out there for a while, because it’s nice. But Beacon's Main Street is there to explore and represents the opportunity to do almost all of your shopping at locally-owned shops.

Stop in at Stella's Fine Market for a curated assortment of goods, drinks, cookbooks and some nice folks to buy from! After that, it’s about a mile past all types of businesses, to where you’ll finally find the Howland Cultural Center; then Main Street makes a sharp curve to the left, and if you keep going to just past where Main and East Main intersect, you’ll find yourself at the Fishkill Overlook Park and Falls. It’s such a good feeling to be in a city and come across nature, in this case with abandoned rail tracks and a small park on one side and the restored Roundhouse on the other, where you’ll see people enjoying themselves on the veranda overlooking the falls. The Fishkill Creek-bed is somewhat rocky here, and it’s very pleasant, after the trek from the other end of Main Street, to stop and enjoy the rushing water. Just across the street are several cool places to check out, including The Snooki Shop and the artist-run BAU Gallery (Beacon Artists Union).

At this point, rather than turn around and slowly make your way back up Main Street toward the river, find Teller Avenue and the Beacon Daily for breakfast all day and a menu reflecting a variety of cultures. Back on Main Street, don’t miss Glazed Over Donuts, known for their over-the-top confections.

There are several breweries in Beacon: Hudson Valley Brewery is tucked in behind the trees near the historic Matteawan Railroad Station; and Industrial Arts, about a mile from Main Street up Fishkill Avenue, has a great view of the Hudson Highlands from their deck.

Speaking of the Hudson Highlands, residents and homeowners love Beacon as much for its outdoor recreational opportunities as its small-city vibe. Besides the country club, there’s Mt. Beacon Park, Madame Brett Homestead, the Hudson Highlands State Park (from which you can enjoy awe-inspiring views of the Hudson River and Hudson Highlands), Dennings Point and Bannerman Island. In-town hang-outs include Memorial Park and the Friends of Beacon Dog Park. A full list of town parks is here

The Tioronda Garden Club, whose largely unsung members beautify public places all over town, is just one of Beacon’s admirable community organizations. Other community groups include the Beacon Institute and, legacy of Pete Seeger, Beacon Sloop Club, worry about the rivers and estuaries; and Beacon Arts is a nonprofit organization behind public events like Second Saturday, the Bicycle Christmas Tree and Bicycle Menorah, Windows on Main Street and the Bus Shelter Project.

Beacon NY Real Estate

A Beacon NY home for sale could be a lot of things: Verplanck Avenue mixes late-19th-century houses with 1960s ranches and 21st-century colonials. Good-sized Victorians line High Street, and row-houses are rife! For example, at the east end of Main Street on prime Beacon real estate sits a nearly 8,000-square-foot reconstructed late-19th-century brick Beacon NY row-house that was recently for sale and had all the good details, like exposed brick, hardwood flooring, a security system and laundry.
