Barrytown NY Real Estate

Barrytown real estate is restful. The undeveloped forests and fields of the Red Hook hamlet of Barrytown constitute a natural haven from our steel and cement world. Picture coming over the bridge from Kingston, and turning into a lovely stretch of winding country road lined by stone walls, towering trees, orchards and exceptionally beautiful old farms. You’ve arrived in Barrytown.

Part of the Hudson River National Historic Landmark District, most of the riverfront land in Barrytown is in residential use, with the exception of the Massena House Estate, occupied by the Unification Theological Seminary, and Montgomery Place, owned by Bard College, Barrytown’s immediate neighbor to the north. The magnificent Edgewater estate is owned by a preservation trust, whilst Rokeby (or “La Bergerie,” the sheep-fold) is owned by descendants of Alida Livingston, for whom it was built in 1815.

The Livingstons (once Dutchess County's most powerful landlords) used to own much of what is now Barrytown, and they started the fashion for building mansion-style homes surrounded by ornamental pleasure grounds and tenant farms. Over the years, of course, fashions—and fortunes—changed; but Barrytown still looks like it did in the mid-19th century, when most of the smaller homes you see there were built. It’s essentially a rural, quiet place to live or to visit, with the amenities of Kingston just over the bridge and Rhinebeck and Red Hook nearby. Barrytown homes for sale are rare! Work with a Coldwell Banker Village Green Realty agent to secure your place in Barrytown.

Barrytown NY History and Lifestyle

Barrytown Homes For Sale

Most visitors to Barrytown are heading to the 120-acre Poets’ Walk Park, where mown and gravel paths lead to a pavilion with legendary views of the Hudson River and Catskills. They might also come for Father’s Trail, Mother’s Trail and the Theodore Roosevelt Trail on the grounds of the Unification Theological Seminary, which also affords spectacular views. (Apparently Teddy Roosevelt spent three weeks here in 1868, when family friends owned the place; his natural history collections that began during this time ended up in NYC’s Museum of Natural History.) Residents to Barrytown have these beautiful places at their disposal every day.

If you like motoring on the water, you might join Barrytown’s Red Hook Boat Club. Kayakers and canoers! Tivoli Bays was named a New York State Important Bird area in 1997, so if you’ve always wanted to catch a glimpse of a least bittern, you’ve got a good chance of doing it here!

Along with recreational activities, Bard College provides a whole world of opportunities and resources in Annandale-on-Hudson. Then there’s Rhinebeck just to the south, settled in 1686 and now home to antique shops, restaurants, Upstate Films, the 1704 Beekman Arms, and a good small hospital.
