Volunteer Opportunities in Greater Newburgh

A guide to 12 local organizations and how you can get involved.

There's a difference between living somewhere and belonging somewhere. Newburgh has no shortage of people who've chosen to belong, showing up at cleanups, coaching Little League, restocking food pantry shelves, mentoring kids who need one more adult in their corner. That's the stuff that actually rebuilds a city, block by block, one Saturday morning at a time.

It also happens to be good for your street, your home, and your bottom line; neighborhoods with strong civic ties and active neighbors tend to see stronger, steadier property values. But that's a nice side effect, not the point.

The point is: this city is worth showing up for. Here are 12 local organizations in and around Newburgh where you can start!

Community

Newburgh Free Library

Founded in 1895, the Newburgh Free Library is a cornerstone of the community, offering books, technology access, ESL classes, youth programs, and literacy services across its main branch and Town Branch location.

Volunteer Opportunities: Three pathways: the Library itself, the Friends of the Library and Literacy Connections. Roles vary by department Needs and may be seasonal. Students can earn community service hours. Requires application and interview. Contact Volunteer Coordinator Talisha Mera at 845-563-3605.

Food Security

Newburgh Urban Farm & Food Initiative (NUFFI)

NUFFI runs the 2-acre Downing Park Urban Farm using organic practices, donating tens of thousands of pounds of fresh produce to local pantries. They also run youth employment and education programs focused on food justice.

Volunteer Opportunities: Opportunities for people passionate about arts, housing, and community. Roles include event support (volunteers get free access to events), arts programming, and community cleanup. Flexible scheduling available.

Volunteer Opportunities: Volunteers assist patients, staff, and visitors across the hospital. Ideal for those with a passion for making a difference through donated time and talents.

Animal Welfare

Volunteer Opportunities: Multiple pathways: onboard volunteers (groups of 4-6) help with sailing and education programs for a week at a time; outreach volunteers table at community events; admin volunteers work 4-8 hours/week in the Beacon office; graphic designers help with marketing. Open to ages 16+.***

Arts & Music

Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra

The GNSO brings professional and community musicians together for 8+ concerts per year, from classical performances to Summer Pops events. Supported by the New York State Council on the Arts, they also offer opportunities for local non-professional musicians to perform.

Volunteer Opportunities: Volunteers support concerts and fundraising events, including the annual Champagne Benefit. Contact the GNSO at gnso@newburghsymphony.org or 845-913-7157 to get involved.

*The SHRED Foundation has expanded beyond Newburgh and is now headquartered in Albany, but still runs youth programs for Newburgh kids at Windham Mountain.

**Montefiore St. Luke's Cornwall welcomes volunteers but directs applicants directly through their community page rather than a dedicated portal — worth calling to get current details.

***Outdoor Promise and the Greater Newburgh Parks Conservancy collaborate closely, as do Outdoor Promise and Clearwater — so volunteering with one often connects you to the others.
