Upstate Raw Bars

Posted by Coldwell Banker Village Green Realty on Tuesday, August 11th, 2015 at 2:06pm

It's summer. In the summer I want raw moluscs. The end.

No, but seriously. I grew up in Maine and lobsters and clams, steamed and raw, were a part of the whole summer experience. Plus my best friend basically won't go to dinner anywhere he can't get a dozen oysters and a really good martini to start the whole thing off. So, while it's unrealistic to expect there to be a clam shack on every corner in the Hudson Valley and Catskills, I have to know where I can some raw seafood. Luckily most of the Real Estate agents at Coldwell Banker Village Green are foodies. All you need do is ask for a recommendation and you're sure to get a great one, maybe you'll get seven. Here's what I got when I asked everyone where they go for raw fare this time of year. (click the pictures to visit restaurant websites.)

Boitsons | Kingston

Boitson's in Uptown Kingston has Oysters. They have mini lobster rolls. They also have another summer favorite - deviled eggs. You can eat it all on a fabulous deck that sits up above the city of Kingston.

Lazy Swan Raw Bistro | Saugerties

Lazy Swan Golf Club has it all. Golf, massage, pilates, and a raw bar with a fabulous view. They call it the "Hamptons In the Catskills", it's maybe better.

Captain Jakes | Newburgh

Dine on the Hudson River Waterfront. They've got a full raw bar.

Gadaleto's Seafood Market and Restaurant | New Paltz

Eat your oysters in or take them home. Gadeleto's is in kind of an un-romantic spot (a strip mall), but the New Paltz agents say it's great and worth overlooking the exterior ambiance.

Commune Saloon | Bearsville

Commune Saloon at the Bearsville Theatre Complex is getting some great buzz. They have yummy oysters plus a whole host of locally sourced food. You can hang out outdoors or in. The vibe is, great house party that you and your friends didn't have to put together. My favorite part? They've got a pool room (the type with balls and sticks, don't bring your bathing suit.)

The Bear Cafe | Bearsville

Right next door to Commune Saloon is the Bear Cafe, a longstanding Woodstock favorite that's recently under new ownership and by all accounts just as great as it always was, but just a little different. They've got a great selection of oysters, so you can sample at Commune then sample at The Bear.

Blue Pointe | Newburgh

Bluepoint is on the banks of the Hudson in Newburgh and a new favorite of our Broker/Owner. They have river-view seating and a full raw bar including a glorious shellfish tower!
