Pickleball Courts In The Hudson Valley and Catskills

"Dink”, "Dink”, “Dink”. It’s the sound that’s taking over America! A sound that springs from an awkward, oversized ping pong racket hitting a wiffleball-esque ball. It’s the sound of quartets of friends coming together for a little exercise and a little chat while they get some sun. If you haven’t been living under a rock, perhaps you’ve made the “Dink” that delights so many once or twice already. Pickleball is the thing right now. Like many things, it took a while to spread across the Hudson Valley and Catskills, but, as the MLP championships (Major League Pickleball) are playing out on TVs in sports bars everywhere, it’s here now.
A few weeks ago, I was in the city for a meeting, and I ended up with a little time to spare on a beautiful day. I sat in the park on West 45th and watched a pack of enthusiastic pickleballers (I’m not 100% sure that’s the term, but I’m going with it) play for half an hour or so. They were of every fitness level and age – the common ground was that they were all thoroughly enjoying themselves. I wanted to play.
So, I’ve put together a list of every court I could find in the Hudson Valley and Catskills region as a reference for myself, my real estate clients, and whoever else would like to make use of it. Let’s all make a resounding “Dink”!
Poughkeepsie, NY
Hudson Valley Pickleball and Golf Center
Rain, shine, wind, snow, whatever the weather, you can play Pickleball indoors at Hudson Valley Pickleball and Golf Center. Their Poughkeepsie facility has ten pickleball courts, five golf simulators, and a bar. You can become a member for priority court access and some other perks for $39/month (there are discounts for pairs and families), or you can play as a walk-in. They also offer lessons!
Staatsburg, NY
Staatsburg Firehouse aka Dinsmore Park
Behind the municipal firehouse in Staatsburg are three pickleball courts. The courts are free to use, but reservations are not available, so you may have to wait a while while picking up pickleball pointers from your peers. There are also basketball courts and a playground.
Catskill, NY
Pickleball at Catskill Golf
Catskill Golf Club, which recently re-opened to the public after going semi-private for a few years, has added two pickleball courts which can be booked online. Notably, Catskill Golf’s pickleball courts are adaptive with extra space on the sides to accommodate wheelchairs.
Kingston, NY
Dink Pickleball
Dink Pickleball is a welcome addition to the Kohl’s shopping center in Kingston. They offer newbies to Pickleball some great options with an affordable Pickleball 101 course and “Private Practice” sessions that let you get ready for their open play sessions. They have teen lessons and summer camps too.
Kingston, NY
Break Point Tennis and Pickleball
This Kingston club, with outposts in Rhinebeck at Omega Institute and Wildflower Farms in Gardiner, requires a membership to play ($100/year). As a long-established, well-kept facility with a venerable reputation in tennis, they offer pickleball courts, lessons, camps, and a matchmaker to help you find a Pickleball partner.
Saugerties, NY
Pickleball NY at Total Tennis
Total Tennis has been a popular destination for those wanting to revel in a racket sport while vacationing for decades. With great food, cozy accommodations, a spa, and a pool, they offer overnight adult tennis camps for those who are visiting and memberships for locals. They have a new pickleball facility and a full schedule of camps, including Thanksgiving and Christmas packages!
Kingston, NY
Zena Recreation Park
“Zena Rec” is a cooperative, membership-based recreation center that offers its members/owners swimming, tennis, pickleball, volleyball, basketball, and open sports fields. Their monthly pickleball nights under the lights are a hit, but members can use the tennis courts that have been modified for pickleball at other times as well. A true community center, Zena Rec has events, live music, a petting zoo, BBQs, and movie nights. I’m sorry the publication of this article is coming a few weeks after their first annual Pickleball tournament. Next year!
Poughkeepsie, NY
Quiet Cove Riverfront Park
This pretty park in Poughkeepsie has four first-come-first-served courts, one of which is adaptive. When you’re done, relax on the observation deck with some lemonade, or plan to make a day of it and launch your kayaks into the Hudson. If the perfect view improves your game, this is where you should play.
Germantown, NY
Haupt Strasse Park
Germantown is well-known for its Parks and Rec department. One of its 18 centers is Haupt Strasse Park, which has four Pickleball courts, a playground, a skatepark, and a baseball diamond.
Rhinebeck, NY
Rhinebeck Tennis Club
Rhinebeck Tennis Club is open to the public with no membership fees. They have five outdoor tennis courts and a single indoor tennis/pickleball court, which can be booked ahead of time online. This might sound like a situation where you’re never going to get a court. Not so. I checked availability for the next few days, and there was plenty.
Windham, NY
High Ridge Club
High Ridge Club has a beautiful Catskill Mountains setting where you can enjoy tennis, pickleball, the pool, pool tables, table tennis, etc. etc. Their Pickleball calendar includes events like “Cardio Pickleball” and “Pickleball Frenzy”!
Kingston, NY
The YMCA of Kingston and Ulster County
The YMCA welcomes members and those who purchase a $15 day pass to the club. They were early adopters! Their courts went in about eight years ago, and you can make a reservation to play online ahead of time.
Saugerties, NY
Cantine Field
Saugerties has a pickleball club that has the courts at Cantine Field reserved one night a week. Otherwise, the four courts available at this Saugerties staple can be booked online. If you want to have a sporty day where you mix it up, put together a Pickleball/Ice Skating mashup in Saugerties. The Kiwanis Ice Arena is open for the season as of last week!
So, now, what to do if you can’t find a court at a convenient distance? Most sporting goods stores (and, of course, Amazon) have Pickleball tape you can use to lay out perfect lines on any hard-surface court – most choose the tennis court because there’s a net (which you’ll lower), but you can also use a basketball court or even a parking lot in good condition. Painstakingly laying out your own court seems to me a tad bit fanatic (feel free to correct me if I’m wrong) when there’s an easier solution available in this kit that provides corners for each section of the court that can be laid down quickly and used again and again. If you’re already a pickler (it turns out this is the correct term!), I hope this list is a resource for you. If you’re not, I have to ask, what’s stopping you? It looks so fun, plus, everyone should try something they’re not good at every once in a while, it keeps us engaged, it keeps us humble, it keeps rarely-used synapses firing. Pickleball in the Catskills and Hudson Valley offers you the opportunity to get some exercise, and who knows, you might discover a new passion! Pickleball Y’all!
