New(er) Businesses In The Catskills And Hudson Valley | January 2023

Posted by Coldwell Banker Village Green Realty on Monday, January 30th, 2023 at 2:22pm

One of the best things about being a real estate agent Upstate is being a change-scout; knowing what's new and exciting in each of our towns is part of my job. Honestly, this is no exertion! I'm inclined to want to know these things anyway! Driving cross-county to meet clients or preview a new property listing affords me opportunities to spot new action, new buildings, and new businesses in the region. Since each of my 150 Coldwell Banker Village Green Realty colleagues are also scouting the new, expanded, or improved, we were able to put together quite the list of spots we've spotted recently - everything from nouveau department stores, to pizza places, to cafes with board game rental programs. Enjoy, and let me know what you try in the comments!

Kitchen Sink Supper Club - Beacon, New York

This inspired and unique new restaurant recently hit Beacon’s Main Street. The Chef, Brian Arnoff, sources local ingredients and explores global flavors with his 4-week rotating menu which includes an optional curated beverage pairing for each item as well as a Friday/Saturday evening tasting menu AND a three course menu most Saturdays. The current menu is an homage to the great Julia Child, and yes, there are takes on boeuf bourguignon and cassoulet! Yummy!

Beast - Fishkill, New York

Beast is a new venture for the team from The Dutchess Biercafe that brings seriously great BBQ, brunch, and cocktails to Fishkill. If you're planning to toss your calorie count to the wind, this is the place to go! The sides are so good, the sandwiches so scrumptious, the desserts so decadent - you get the point. The important thing is, Beast is worth it and likely to be a success if the Biercafe is any measure; before it occupied 1097 Main Street in Fishkill the door revolved at a dizzying pace. They seem to have the right recipe!

Wildflower Farms, Auberge Resorts - Gardiner, New York

“140 arcadian acres… a slow-rippling river gently embraces free-standing cabins framing clear views of the mighty Shawangunk Ridge. Crisp air, bright skies and the melodies of Mother Nature beckon stillness and contemplation, while forested footpaths and towering cliffs call to an adventurer's spirit.” I love the aesthetic of the rooms and the restaurant at this incredible getaway - it's a rebirth of the old Catskills in a pretty, modern package that gives the beauty of Gardiner's landscape its due. I'm booking a cabin and a feast!

Emma's Café And Cones - Holmes, New York

New on the Hudson Valley Ice Cream scene! 22 hard ice cream flavors, parfaits, milkshakes, and ice cream NACHOS?! 2 scoops of ice cream and two toppings served with mini waffle chips – yes please!

Savona’s Trattoria - Hudson, New York

Savona’s has blessed Upstate New York with their traditional Italian meals for over 50 years – and now they’ve gifted us a new location on Hudson’s thoroughfare! When you're in the mood for Italian staples executed perfectly - visit Savaona's.

Mill & Main - Kerhonkson, New York

The coffee shop and market at Mill & Main are a Kerhonkson staple, so everyone at CBVGR is SUPER excited for the opening of their new restaurant, bar, and garden in March 2023! They plan to feature a seasonal menu that “celebrates local producers, with a full-service bar stocked with local beers, small batch spirits, and natural wines.” Count us in!

Kinderhook Knitting Mill – Kinderhook, New York

One of the most exciting new spaces in the valley! The Kinderhook Knitting Mill is a “community-minded space bringing together food, art, and design in an 1870s textile mill.” It will house three eateries (all with different vibes but equally high-quality bites and drinks), a carefully curated general store, wine shop, flower shop, bath shop, and a gallery. I love to see a cool old building get a new lease on life and this one's proximity to our Kinderhook office means I'll be paying it frequent visits.

Salamone’s Italian Foods - Kingston, New York

Ummm...yum!!!! Salamone's is a traditional Italian Deli on Wall Street in the Stockade District of Kingston. Sandwiches (ranging from $10-$15) are named with some cheek (my favorite is the “Lucky Luciano”- it’s as dangerous as its namesake,) fresh pasta is piled high, and the arancini di riso is calling my name whenever I'm in our Kingston office down the street.

The Jet Set — Newburgh, New York

There aren’t many restaurants in the Hudson Valley that set out to transport you to a different time and place. The Jet Set on Newburgh's waterfront is a time warp to the mid-century modern Hawaiian vacations of your parents and grandparents. Its retro tiki bar offers fruit-forward crafted cocktails, bar food with an Asian bent, and a collection of tiki-mugs that will have you ignoring your phone and chatting with the other 40 people seated at the bar. For a full night of retro fun, bowl first at Pat Tarsio Lanes.

Resorts World Hudson Valley - Newburgh, New York

New York’s newest casino is right here in the Hudson Valley. It has over 1000 slots and electronic table games, and, if you’re not a gambler but looking for a new nightlife spot, an always-happening sports bar in the center of the casino.

Gunks Gaming Guild & Café – New Paltz, New York

Here's a totally different kind of gaming. This cafe in New Paltz has food, libations, coffee, and 200+ board games; there's also the occasional movie night, swing dance night, costume party and, of course, regular DND campaigns. This is the kind of business everyone can enjoy!

Lemon Squeeze - New Paltz, New York

The first New Paltz raw bar, piano bar, and restaurant combo on Main Street! Blue point oysters, lobster bisque, beetroot terrine, waygu beef sliders, king salmon, cauliflower steak, NY strip…their menu has something for everyone. Here are three things I love about this new spot:

1. It's named after a hiking trail at Mohonk with an intentional beverage double entendre - clever,

2. It was started by a couple of New Paltz alumni who just kept coming back,

3. While the interior has been completely revamped, the exterior is the one we've known and loved for as long as we all can remember.

When you visit, try their signature cocktail “Final Squeeze.”

Canvas And Clothier - Poughkeepsie, New York

A joint venture between Jillian Kaufman Grano of Utility Canvas and MaryVaughn Williams of Hudson Clothier, Canvas and Clothier is a micro department store of US made goods for women, men, and home that feels totally fresh and, at the same time, offers a department store experience (a welcome break from online shopping!) with fashions and home goods that borrow from decades past.

I love their grand opening video almost as much as I like their bags!

The Dutch Crown – Poughkeepsie, New York

The Dutch Crown’s mission is to bring the community, “good food, good drinks, and good times,” and it seems they’re doing just that. Grab a sourdough pizza, a sandwich, and other eclectic eats there 7 days a week.

Midnight Munchie Company – Poughkeepsie, New York

We always welcome a new bakery and this one's a little different! The Midnight Munchie Company allows you to order cookies online. Once they receive your order, they bake the cookies and then deliver them to you warm. Come on! This is too good to be true! Definitely add the Midnight Munchie Company to your weekend list. They're also a great resource when you planned to bake something for an event and just can't make it happen! We've all been there.

Newberry Artisan Market - Saugerties, New York

A beautiful new marketplace awaits in the vintage J.J. Newberry nickel and dime building on Main Street in Saugerties. The 10,000 sqft open market is both harmonious and diverse - a perfect blend of antique and modern in its renovations, design, AND vendors. The market hosts over 30 local artisans who offer everything from antiques, collectibles, and clothing, to jewelry, ceramics, paintings, and greeting cards.

Upstate Taco - Stone Ridge, New York

Upstate Taco's permanent menu is perfection. Their one-day taco specials? Beyond. Shrimp and pomegranate with green onion and cilantro… Chorizo, sweet potato, and kale…. Yes please. Of course you can take out your tacos, but why not sit down at the cozy taco bar on Route 209 in Stone Ridge and chat with owners Mauricia and Sasha? This is the perfect place for a winter taco!

Camp Catskill – Tannersville, New York

“The ethical outdoor shop.” Camp Catskill’s mission is to build a community around spending time in and protecting the Catskills with their outdoor gear made of sustainable, durable, and often recycled materials. They pledge 1% of their revenue to environmental conservation through 1% For The Planet. I've been eying Cotopaxi bags online for a while now and I'm thrilled to have a local place to pick one up!

Hotel Lilien - Tannersville, New York

“Pull up a chair and you’ll find friendly faces, cozy corners, and good times at our artfully restored and thoughtfully curated 18-room boutique hotel and cocktail bar. A stone’s throw from Hunter Mountain, we’re minutes away from the region’s best dining and outdoor adventures. It’s a place where locals and visitors gather around the same wood burning stove to clink craft beers, share stories, and slow time just for awhile—the unofficial living room of Tannersville.” There is nothing not to love here - they've done an incredible job of melding the old Catskills with the new. I just might make it my unofficial living room, it's cozy, beautiful, and their lovely staff cleans it!
