Hudson Valley Condos: Easy Living in Paradise

Are You Right For Country Condominium Living?

When you think of moving to the Hudson Valley - packing up the contents of your teensie weensie apartment further Downstate or moving from a place that maybe doesn't have quite the same lifestyle advantages of the great Hudson Valley, what do you picture? Do you picture a farmhouse with cool antique details that you'll highlight with some modern decor? Do you picture an ultra-modern, green-built, square-shaped house with no neighbors in sight? Do you picture a little cottage by a stream that's just the right size for you, your significant other and that puppy you really want? You're not alone! Many of our buyers picture this. But let's do a little exercise....

Question #1: Do you think this is a good look?

If you answered "YES! Love it! Where do I get me one of those tool belts and, let's be real here, some more practical shoes?" then you should stop reading this page and look through our featured listings for your dream antique farmhouse. If you don't find the perfect thing there, maybe you can track this lady down and give her a hand addressing whatever is going on mid-way up her walls behind that snazzy wallpaper.

If you answered "Yuck" or "Gross". Keep going.

Question #2: A or B?

If you answered A
- you're probably not going to love Condo living. You want to spend some time getting dirt on your hands. Browse for a Hudson Valley property on an acre+.

If you answered B - Condo living may be for you. How much do you like that picture? Does it make you feel super great? Or just pretty great? Are you totally confused? If you are, I'm not surprised.

Here's the final part of this little exercise. Go back to the original image of your Hudson Valley dream house. Zoom out on that picture. What are you doing at that little cottage, antique farmhouse, or super-hip green box? Are you hanging out in the yard? Are you whiling away your days puttering and decorating? Or are you using it as a home-base to launch your adventures? Is it a good place to store your hiking gear or to come home to after you've gone from the farmer's market, to an art festival, to an outdoor concert?

Here's why I'm asking all these questions; I truly believe that a homeowner's happiness depends more on if the home fits their lifestyle than if the style of the house fits their ideal. If what you really want to spend your time on your boat exploring the Hudson and you'd rather not spend your time tiddying up the garden beds you should consider a condo. I grew up in Maine with parents who like nothing better than to gut old houses and fix them up. They take great care preserving the details worthy of preservation and improving everything else without leaving a modern mark. It's commendable. Guess what? It takes up all their time!

I love to do stuff like hike and bike and go on learning adventures (this weekend we're headed off to Howe Caverns - watch for an upcoming post). But I'm just as happy to spend the day painting my peeling garage door. House or Condo, I'm going to be fine.

My husband hates projects. Projects often end with his tools receiving a lot of undeserved insults. But he is stuck on home ownership. For some reason he doesn't consider owning a condo home ownership. It absolutely is. And it just might be the perfect type of home ownership for you.

Condos are the same type of asset as a stand-alone home. They grow (or shrink) in worth with the real estate market. And they are significantly easier to care for! If you are a condo owner in the Hudson Valley you probably won't have to worry about your garden beds, trees overhanging your roof, your septic system, or plowing. You might even get a pool and a tennis court that you don't have to care for in the deal! You'll be free to decorate to your heart's delight on the interior, and spend the rest of your free time enjoying the area. Vive la country condo living!

If you've been floored by condo association fees in the city you'll probably be pleasantly surprised by the fees for the Hudson Valley Condos you're looking at. In Woodstock you can expect to spend about $400/month to cover plowing, shoveling and sanding of roads, driveway and walkways, lawn-care and planting maintenance, pool, tennis courts, roof and siding maintenance. Once you consider the cost of a riding mower, a hedge trimmer, a snow blower, a chain saw and all the hours it will take you to man those tools, it begins to seem like a bargain.

Ready to sign up? Here are the condos that are on the market at the moment. If you don't see exactly what you're looking for contact one of our agents and they'll help you locate your own personal condo nirvana.
