Friction-Max Via The Drive-In Theaters of The Hudson Valley and Catskills

One day, two weeks ago, I was answering my social media messages and taking a few minutes to browse local news when, from several sources, I became informed that The Hyde Park Drive-In was reopening this summer! Woo-hoo! Obviously, this is wonderful news! I love a drive-in, and I was genuinely excited that this Hudson Valley icon was coming back! I was a little surprised, though, that it seemed like such big news... A lot is going on in the world. I was even more surprised to find, when I clicked through to articles, that there was no specified timeframe for its reopening, no screening schedule, and no mention of who the new proprietors are! The drive-in is owned by the National Park Service, and the land is leased to a tenant who is required to use it, in the evenings, as a seasonal drive-in movie theatre. Why was this half-news story flooding my social feed? "Why?" I exclaimed. Why?
Now I find myself a little obsessed with what is happening at the Hyde Park Drive-In, who the new proprietors are, etc., etc. It's a Hudson Valley mystery! However, I think I've solved one part of it: I was inundated with this half-story because "friction-maxxing" is the compound word of the moment. Friction-maxxing is a new term, coined by a writer at The Cut earlier this year, and adopted by seemingly everyone in the world. It's a lifestyle trend in which you purposely seek out difficult ways to do things (read the old-fashioned way of doing things) to regain focus, boost connection to people and things, and perhaps regain some of the zest for life that technology and our endless pursuit of efficiency have caused us to lose.
Going to a drive-in movie is the ultimate way to friction-max your evening entertainment! Think about it. Netflix equals easy and easily forgettable. Drive-in movies require planning, a little travel, maybe getting some friends on board, human interaction with the other patrons who have brought their comfy blankets and their kids to park next to you for the early family-friendly feature, as well as with the teens running the snack bar. You’re not going to forget about that night. In fact, I remember the drive-in movies I saw as a child in great detail, the plot of the movie, who was in the car with me, and what we had for a snack. I do believe the friction-maxxers are on to something!
I’ve got my eyes peeled and my ears tuned for any new developments in the Hyde Park scene, and, even if the mystery proprietor takes a while to get up and running (I get it, these things take a while), I will be making a point to go to one of the drive-in theatres in the area this summer. Four Brothers in Amenia looks great, as do their shakes and lobster rolls. Hello, warm nights beneath the blue glow of a GIANT screen.

Four Brothers Drive-In
Four Brothers is the ultimate Drive-In. You can rent an airstream with a deck for the night, arrive after 12PM to park for the evening, and eat at their snack bar or restaurant where they offer lobster rolls, burgers, truffle fries, and incredible shakes. Imagine your drive-in fantasy – this is it.
Hiway Drive-In
In continuous operation for over 50 years, and recently under new ownership, this one is a classic. If you want the authentic old-school experience – head here.
Overlook Drive-In
The Overlook holds the distinction of being the closest drive-in to NYC. It’s a family-owned business with a screen as tall as a six-story building! They recommend that you arrive early to get a spot during peak season.
Warwick Drive-In
If you want mountain views while you take in a movie, the Warwick Drive-In is the place for you. They also host a film fest in August.
