Avoid Cabin Fever | 10 January Events in The Catskills & Mid-Hudson Valley

Posted by Coldwell Banker Village Green Realty on Wednesday, January 1st, 2020 at 9:41pm

Say, "Slippers, begone!", with our list of 10 Catskill events in January 2020 - they'll get you out of the house and keep you out of a funk.

There's only one way to avoid the "Cabin Fever" of February and March that we all dread in the North East - get out of your cabin! Get out! Go somewhere! I know, I know, so many of the temptations to leave home have disappeared. Want some yummy take out? You can probably get it delivered. Want to watch a movie? Gone are the days of Blockbuster and even Red Box (I miss them). Want to catch up with a friend? Skype them, whatsapp them, or facetime+facebook two different buddies on two different devices. All this seems great, until you begin to feel the walls close in and it's 10 pm on Saturday night and you realize you've been wearing the same flannel shirt since last Sunday morning. This is not good. You can nest some of the time, but you should get out on a regular basis! This is the Catskills! You're in the mountains! Even if you're not in the mountains, you're also not in the city. Why are you here? Because there's actually stuff to do in the winter! Let's do it!

Here are my 10 suggestions:

1. Adult Ski Racing Training - Hunter Mountain

Let's start with the most aggressive option - Ski Race training. Available at Hunter Mountain, take one training or a full season; there are 3 dates in January. This is the polar opposite of Netflix binging in slippers! Click here for more info.

2. Create Your Own Retreat at Menla - Phoenicia

Menla in Phoenicia is beautiful. They say it's, "Tibet In The Catskills", and I don't think they're over-selling. In the winter there are amazing views, beautiful streams that make even more beautiful ice formations, and true, deep quiet. Jan 10th-12th they're offering a "Create Your Own Getaway" which is like a choose-your-own-adventure for Yogi's. Click here for more info.

3. The Ashokan Center's Winter Hoot - Olivebridge

The Winter Hoot is such a cool event. It runs the weekend of Jan 31-Feb 2nd at the Ashokan Center in Olivebridge. Ashokan is a retreat that focuses on outdoor education, preserving traditions and music. The Hoot is a weekend of folk music, meeting nice people, and talking about taking care of the beauty that surrounds us here in the Mountains. Bring your guitar or whatever else you play (a shaker made of a Quaker Oats container is just fine), and some comfy dancing shoes. More information here.

4. Guided Snowshoe Tours - Windham Mountain

If you didn't grow up on the slopes, skiing can be a daunting prospect. For those of us with a fear of an uncontrolled high-speed slide down a mountain on sticks, snowshoeing is a no-brainer alternative. Snowshoeing is also an incredible workout! In an hour you can burn anywhere from 350 to 1000 calories, even more if you use poles (why wouldn't you use poles?). Windham Mountain has daily guided snowshoe tours on the weekends that start mid-afternoon and include snowshoe rentals and a glass of wine at the Umbrella Bar for the very reasonable fee of $40. More information here.

5. 2 Locals In Concert At The Colony Cafe - Woodstock

The Colony Cafe has seen great days, and not-so-great days. Today it's days are great. If you haven't been to see a show there lately you should make the trip. It will easily fit into your schedule because they have a full calendar of performers all-year round. Amidst a total of 16 event in January are performances by two local favorites, Robert Burke Warren and Simi Stone. Robert Burke Warren will be performing his David Bowie tribute "Accoustic Stardust 20" with backup from other local artists on Jan 11th and Simi Stone whose infectious vocal energy will put you in the right place for the start of the year is performing January 16th. Get details on all of The Colony's offerings here.

 6. Game Night At Angry Orchard - Walden

If you feel ok about it, you can absolutely keep that flannel shirt on and head to Angry Orchard for a good old-fashioned night of board games and hard cider and yummy food pairings, the perfect winter's evening fun. January 11th at 5pm

7. Create Your Life/Create Your Year Workshop - Red Hook

Here's the deal...we don't always recognize our heart's desires as they float through our consciousness. Maybe you need some help separating them from the rest of the noise in there. There's a workshop for that! In Red Hook! It's hosted by Linda Freeman, MFA, MBA, and Certified Life Coach. Why not? The workshop is two days long, Saturday Jan 18th and Saturday Jan 25th - details here.

8. Columbia Land Conservancy's January Nature Night: Moths - Chatham

It's worthwhile to take time to focus on the small things that surround us - like moths. Moths have an important place in our local ecosystem. I'm just not sure what it is. If we attend this talk we'll all leave with a better idea of how to be "moth-minded". January 9th at 5:30

9. Volume Reading Series - Hudson

This is the most unexpected event I've come across lately. It happens the 2nd Saturday of every month at the Spotty Dog Books and Ale in Hudson. First, is an hour of poetry and/or prose reading and then an hour of dj and dancing. How fun does that sound? It's intellectual, it's silly, it's getting out of the house for intellectual + silly without a huge time commitment. Even if you bring a friend who only likes silly or intellectual, they can make it through the other hour no problem. Love it!

10. Winter Mossy Glen Hike at Minnewaska State Park - Kerhonkson

Take a winter walk with a Minnewaska Park educator on January 18th at 10am. Details and registration here.
