Homes in Wawarsing NY

Wawarsing is located in the extreme southwestern corner of Ulster County, bordered by the magnificent Shawangunk range (“The Gunks”) on the east and the Catskill Mountain foothills on the west. The centerpiece, Rondout Valley, is home to fertile farms, meandering streams and many lovely homes.

During the American Revolution, the Ellenville lead mine produced material for bullets for the Patriots, and a mastodon, now on exhibit at the State Education Building in Albany, was discovered nearby. The Ulster Knife Works in Ellenville, producer of one of the most popular and dependable lines of cutlery ever made in America, is believed to be the oldest shop of its kind in the U.S. The historic site at Terwilliger House, Shawangunk Ridge, Rondout Reservoir, Sam’s Point Preserve, Lippman and Kanfer Parks, D&H Rail Trail, and several major resorts are among Wawarsing’s numerous assets.

Avid hang-gliders and mountain climbers join the usual mix of outdoor enthusiasts in this area, owing to the renown of the majestic “Gunks.” Hispanic culture is alive and well throughout this area, with a population well above the state average.
