Protected by the Catskill Mountains (including Slide Mountain, highest peak in the Catskill range at 4,220 feet) and fed by numerous streams – sporting some of the best trout and bass fishing in the northeast – Shandaken is a peaceful township comprised of several small communities and hamlets. The largest of these, Phoenicia, sits right on the Esopus Creek, which attracts tubing as well as fishing enthusiasts each summer. Other hamlets include Mt. Tremper, Mt. Pleasant, Chichester, Allaben, Shandaken, Bushnellsville, Big Indian, Oliverea, Woodland Valley, Pine Hill, and Highmount, each distinguished by their own special character and an abundance of natural attractions. Hiking, tubing, fishing, hunting, downhill and cross-country skiing (at Belleayre and Highmount ski centers), and other outdoor activities are all thriving in this bucolic corridor of the Catskills.

This area was first settled by Native Americans, and European immigrants arrived around the time of the Revolutionary War. Farms, orchards, lumber mills, furniture making industries, bluestone quarries and other businesses preceded the railroad’s arrival; a vibrant boarding house and tourist industry was quick to follow. These days, you’ll find luxurious accommodations and amenities at Emerson Place and The Copperhood Spa, for instance, but, for the most part, this area remains relatively untouched by commercialization or development.

Esopus Creek flows through Shandaken township and supplies water to the Ashokan Reservoir, a major water source for NYC and a favorite destination for walkers, bicyclists, rollerbladers and runners (and, yes, fishermen, with permits).
