If you plan your moves by looking at the map, you’ll be drawn to Narrowsburg for its dynamic site at a u-turn bend of the Delaware River. And for a heavenly drive there come up Route 97 from Port Jervis, meandering along the winding river, which forms part of the border between New York and Pennsylvania. Before you leave Port Jervis take a moment at the Park Avenue Observatory to get your first good look at the river.

If you’re ready for a little something, you’ll enjoy having your cake and eating it, too… that is to say savoring food and drink whilst imbibing the atmosphere of the Delaware’s “big eddy,” the deepest spot in the river. Right on Narrowsburg’s main drag are the Heron—you’ll want a reservation here—and Tusten Cup, both with small porches out back; at Tusten Cup, enjoy a coffee and homemade dessert or one of the best egg-and-cheese sandwiches you’ll get anywhere. Not far away is The Laundrette, with a larger, charming outdoor seating area where the river is wide and a few tasty cocktails, beers on tap and some special pizzas, salads and snacks. (A reservation wouldn’t be wasted here, either.)
More into working out than sitting still watching the water? Then you’ll want to drop into Chi Hive for yoga, Pilates or just to use the gym. Then again, if you’d rather stay outdoors for your exercise--and who wouldn’t in this neck of the woods--check out the Fitness Trail at Narrowsburg’s Multigenerational Park. If you have a basketball in the car, you can throw that around there, too!
