Saugerties is nestled next to the shores of the Hudson River accessible via the Esopus Creek (where there’s a National Registry lighthouse, lovely little public beach and nascent marina scene).
The town is growing, yet retains its essential character of friendliness. Despite the recent influx of such heavy-hitters as HITS-on-the-Hudson (the newest facility for Horse-Shows-in-the-Sun, which attracts thousands of equestrians from all over the country each May to September), and the upcoming groundbreaking for the new casinos just outside of town, Saugerties’ Main Street still evidences its roots as a thriving mid-19th century village. With a new paint job, parking meters, Chinese restaurant, pizza parlor and a movie theater, that is. At the four corners, the new bookstore, Inquiring Minds, co-exists peacefully with an upscale bistro, the locals’ hotel/bar and Dallas Hot Weiners. Just down the hill, you’ll find Krause’s Homemade Candy.
The town’s history is evident everywhere: due to its fortuitous placement on Esopus Creek and the nearby Hudson River, Saugerties was one of the earliest settlements developed by European immigrants in the late 17th and 18th centuries. Many enterprising business owners and industry leaders took advantage of the waterways and established Saugerties as an early “destination of choice.”
Today, Saugerties is widely renowned for three of its annual festivals – Jazz, Garlic and Mum – as well as its summer concert series at Opus 40. It is also the winter docking location for The Sloop Clearwater, a educationally-oriented replica of the Old Dutch sloops that once carried cargo up and down the river.
