Once a busy hub of the Ulster and Delaware Railroad, Phoenicia is now a somewhat sleepy little town just 25 miles northwest of Kingston. Its small main street boasts an eclectic mix of cafes, shops, and stores selling sundries. The ever-popular Town Tinker Tube Rental is just around the corner, as is skilling (Highmount and Belleayre) and some of the best trout and bass fishing in the county, The Copperhood Spa, and the Emerson Place complex, with upscale shops, spa, restaurants and lodging. In recent years, growing numbers of artistic types have discovered Phoenicia, and now co-exist peacefully with the town’s original residents.
Esopus Creek flows through Shandaken township and supplies water to the Ashokan Reservoir, a major water source for NYC and a favorite destination for walkers, bicyclists, rollerbladers and runners (and, yes, fishermen, with permits).
