Historically, New Paltz has much to offer: the National Historic Landmark District on Huguenot Street, the oldest street in America, is still home to seven stone houses and a reconstructed church dating back to the early 1700s. This early settlement of French Protestants near the Wallkill River is now preserved by the Huguenot Historical Society. In more recent times, New Paltz and the surrounding area has become a true melting pot, attracting vibrant communities of Dutch, English, German, Italian and Latino people.
Outside of town, the upscale Mohonk Mountain House, a 251-room Victorian resort hotel established in 1869, is surrounded by 2,200 acres of mountainous woodlands, including a 9-hole golf course, lakes, gardens, and hiking trails. Minnewaska State Park, the Mohonk Preserve, and the incomparable rock climbing peaks of the Shawangunk Mountain Ridge (“The Gunks” were named “one of Earth’s last great places” by The Nature Conservancy) attract hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. The area is also renowned for a thriving fruit industry and many wineries and vineyards. The long-standing Woodstock-New Paltz Art & Crafts Fair is held at the Ulster County Fairgrounds in New Paltz, attracting over 300 craftspersons and artists and thousands of visitors each Memorial Day and Labor Day weekend. And yes, the Ulster County Fair is held at the Fairgrounds in early August.
