Museums, galleries and historic sites celebrate Kingston’s rich history and progression to its contemporary status as a center of commerce and industry. From “The First Capital of NYS” to the development of the Kingston Business Park and Tech City, Kingston has maintained an important place at the forefront of the Hudson Valley – and the nation. Blessed with an abundance of natural resources – bricks, cement, bluestone – and people with the skills and initiative to use them, Kingston provided the raw materials to build cities from the 19th century onward. Prior to the arrival of IBM and computer manufacturing in the middle of the 20th century, Kingston powered its economic viability with small machine manufacture, garment making and other industries. Today, the business-friendly complexes that once housed IBM have been converted into “incubators,” and high-tech office and manufacturing facilities for businesses both large and small.

The smaller Town of Kingston is located along the Sawkill Creek between the City of Kingston and Woodstock. Once renowned for quarries that produced bluestone to pave city sidewalks and streets throughout the Northeast, and for small farms and mill works that took advantage of the Sawkill to grind grain and make gunpowder, this appealing municipality retains a more rural and suburban flavor.
