Towpath locks 16 to 20 of the Delaware & Hudson Canal run through High Falls. This canal was constructed from 1825-1829 and, at a cost of $1 million, the first canal in America built as a private enterprise. Increased cultural diversity, as well as a number of new industries such as boat building, foundries, glass works, stone quarries, lumber & paper mills, tanneries and Rosendale cement, among others, prospered during the 1800s as a result of proximity to the busy D&H Canal.
