The original mill at Tuthilltown sits at the center of Gardiner, which is also the juncture of the Wallkill River and Shawangunk Kill and evidence of how water power secured this town’s early prominence due to a thriving industry of grist, saw and woolen mills. Today, this southern Ulster County town (just 75 miles north of NYC) is a favorite destination for urban expatriots. Bounded by the sheer cliffs of the Shawangunk Mountain range, lush evergreen forests, and the verdant floodplains and basins of the Wallkill River, Gardiner is indeed lovely and dramatic. The former site of the Ulster County Poorhouse (which operated from the early 1800s to the mid-1950s) is now the Ulster County Fair and Ulster County Pool Complex. Commercial apple orchards, hayfields and horse farm pastures abound near tasteful suburban developments and Gardiner’s small central business district.
